As you all may well have noticed, this blog has been largely inactive. I've recently re-posted some statements and news articles about the state of the legal battle between Orlando Food not Bombs and the City of Orlando. These topics are pretty near and dear to me, and several other members of YBC and I hope they didn't throw anyone off hoping to scope siqq tarck bike pron. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

That said, there's scheduled to be a protest at City Hall to coincide with the city council meeting on Monday, July 26th at Noon. In case you're unfamiliar, city hall is located at South St. and Orange Ave, downtown.

Would we like to make a distinct presence? Who can make it?

A Statement from Orlando Food Not Bombs

"Orlando Food Not Bombs is not going anywhere. We will not slink out of Orlando because a court ruling goes against us. Some accuse us of being "outside agitators" with a covert agenda, but we freely admit that our purposes are both humanitarian and political. Many of us live here, and it is our city, too. We will continue to share food at a location in or near downtown Orlando twice a week, as we have for more than five years. We do this because thousands of hungry people desperately need the food that we provide and because we truly believe that food is a right -- not a privilege.

"The City of Orlando, from Mayor Buddy Dyer on down, has provided ample evidence that it believes that food and human survival are mere privileges. They have repeatedly criminalized homelessness and dehumanized the poor and the homeless. Some of their more outrageous actions have included creating an undercover Orlando police unit to nab panhandlers and arresting an FNB member for the heinous crime of ladling out stew too many times (this involved 15 police officers!). We would love to know how many of our hard-earned tax dollars Dyer and his minions have squandered harassing the hungry, and opposing those who provide them with aid (without using one penny of public money).

"Orlando Food Not Bombs can not and will not stand down and allow an apartheid-like system of injustice based upon socio-economic status to go unchallenged. The court ruling was only part of one battle; our struggle for a freer, more equitable and compassionate society continues. We have partnered with other groups and individuals to organize and advocate in our community around issues such as poverty, jobs, support for the rights of workers and immigrants, gentrification, affordable housing, social services, and police accountability.

"We will hold local public officials accountable for how their decisions affect everyone--not just corporate and business interests and wealthy campaign donors. We will demand that they recognize that the greatness of a city is not measured by how much it can lavish on arenas and performing arts centers, but by how it treats the least among us. We will make the powerful listen and we will make them act.

"In closing, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our lawyer, Jacqueline Dowd. It is only due to Jackie's tireless efforts on our behalf that we have been able to share food at Lake Eola Park these last four years despite the City's anti-homeless food sharing ordinance. We esteem Jackie for her commitment to this cause and to the people with whom we share and to everyone in our community who is disadvantaged."

Nobody knows how, but the City of Orlando has won their appeal in the precedent setting Orlando Food not Bombs vs. The City of Orlando case, where; in 2008, it was proven that sharing food with the less-fortunate and hungry; marginalized by our economic system - to highlight that marginalization, and shed light on the politics of hunger is considered expressive conduct under the first amendment.

Today is wednesday, our oldest running day of food-sharing, and it's yet unclear what we can expect, so I urge everyone who can to show up to the food sharing to show support and see for yourself the need vs. the disruption to the park the food sharing is (and maybe, what disruption the city's cronies will be responsible for).

Critical Class

What an eventful Critical Mass this was on Friday February 26, 2010. Good old fashioned hootenanny! Officer Chaplin obviously frustrated by cyclists not listening to his demands decides to take the law into his own hands (he is a cop after all), and started to herd cyclists by using the ol' "cut off and brake in front of them" approach. While frustrated he was, he didn't care to notice how he was endangering citizen's lives with his "hot pursuit" of which he called for "you on the bicycle to pull over". Obviously, this created much confusion as there were a few hundred of us on bicycles. Some listened and others didn't. One particular fellow also named Steve was the victim of Chaplin's plight.

Chaplin under the impression that bicycles are not vehicles accused Steve of obstructing traffic. Which in the second video attached to this post you can see his squad car blocking the intersection of Shady Lane and Edgewater Drive, and a yellow car subsequently having to drive on the wrong side of the road to maneuver around said squad car. While another squad car blocked the turning lane on Edgewater to Shady Lane. The officers made multiple threats that any other cyclist who stopped would also be ticketed for obstructing traffic including those who stopped on the sidewalk, or myself who was directly in front of Chaplin's squad car.

One thing you do not see in the videos is Steve being forced onto the top of Chaplin's squad car hood. And a taunting by one of the officers, to say things directly to the camera to make "it" look more dramatic. Overall, this attack on cyclists rights shows the need of accountability on the abuse of one's position of "power"; in question is Chaplin's and every other police officer's use of intimidation and fear to persecute people because of their choice of transportation. This sad moment in history for Orlando Critical Mass is only the cherry on the cake for a consistently antagonistic and endangering police force trying to control and manage this non-violent, friendly bike ride.

A thought I had after this event occurred is that there was very little solidarity in the moment. Mass listened to the officers demands to keep moving, and in my personal opinion this was a mistake. There were three officers and a few hundred of us. Sadly, when less eyes are watching police often abuse their self-given power to get away with bigger injustices. If Critical Mass is just that a critical mass, every part of that mass is critical, every rider is needed. There were only a handful of us who stayed to observe the police's actions.

Steve wound up being served two tickets for doing something that every other person that rode cold have been accused of. He has been made an example of by those that want to control mass, and for this there needs to be a continued discussion to stop further injustices from happening. This persecution will not stop here, but only if people begin to understand that Critical Mass is a statement. What that statement is up to you. But still we ride!

jon and i were also talking about trying to find out days that might be more suitable for various reasons, so if not a ride...maybe there is some time when we can get together and discuss such things. i know we are both off on sundays during the day. would this be a good time for everyone?

TIME'S UP!

Tonight, I had the pleasure of spending time with some friendly and wonderful folks at TIME'S UP bike coop (at their Brooklyn location). I always enjoy seeing how different people in different areas react to the needs of their community, and the constant flow of people in there definitely made it seem that it has long been an integral part of the community here.

Overall, the space had every tool my friend and I needed, but it did seem this location didn't have many used parts, and didn't have storage for works in project. I assume that their Manhattan location did. I commend them for their awesome efforts in participating in direct action against car culture, and aiming on bringing together everyone through cycling.

If you're in NYC, traveling through for any amount of time, I would highly suggest checking them out, and I'm sure you'll be greeted by their friendly demeanor and knowledgeable mechanics. It was most definitely a nice change in pace from the not so friendly attitudes of some of the more well known bike shops up here.

alright! went on a short freaky friday ride with brad last night. stopped at davids global bicycle emporium and got one tire! dumpster was pretty empty. i guess friday is definitely the ay to go, at least there.

talkin to fromdeland i think the plan is to have our mutual friend from heart of gold make a screen(of our design) for us and send it to us. i think this is sweet on several levels 1. it will increase co-op between like minded bike punx and 2. he will do a badass job.

Running up that Hill

Thursday Morning!

I'm riding to Gainesville again for THE FEST. It'll be about 112 miles (a great way to "break myself" after being off my bike for a torturous 2 months). I can usually count on 15/20 mph average for rides that are flat, relatively wind-free and less than 50 miles, but this ride is really hilly, and in my experience, was also windy. I'd count on 10-15 mph for this (6 to 10 hours of riding time, plus breaks). It'll probably be pretty horrible after awhile and I might bring camping supplies to break up the ride for a two-day'er

Bike set up (i wish I had a touring bike, god damnit - maybe i'll fix up circle pat's gitane): Pista Concept with 650c front - 46x17 - not well suited in the slightest.

I met John Prolly in Brooklyn, randomly enough! I remember when I ran into Tom Lamarche in Philly after the Amebix Show back in January, Steve mentioned that he'd only be impressed when I ran into Prolly himself. Hahaha. There you go, steve.

For the record, he's a really nice guy it seems. He seemed surprised that I recognized him, much moreso that people read his blog ("prolly" one of, if the THE most read FG Blogs out there).

Still no luck, however, in meeting BSNYC. I'll just have to settle for NSYNC member Joey Fatone (or Fat One) who I met while pedicabbing in Orlando ca. 2005. Maybe I'll hang out at NYSC (New York Sports Club, a popular gym).

ORLANDO TOMORROW

I'll be back in the peninsular paradise of Orlando tomorrow night! Anyone want to hang out? I've seen some cool stuff and met some cool people for sure, and if there's any way I could sum up my feelings on being back, it'd be "Fucking Awesome."

Travel and get out of town a lot: the grass does look greener everywhere, but I'd say as a whole, Orlando takes itself for granted a lot. To paraphrase (or misquote) two cool people (xbillyx from daytona, and elise):

"If you hate your city, you hate yourself..."

and

"If you're bored, you're boring..."

I think the punx need to be upped more. I think people need to quit saying "f****t" and calling everything they don't like "gay." I think it's about time people hung out everyday again (and excuse me sincerely if all these things have happened while i've been gone), let's actualize the potential of RCBC, Food not Bombs, Black Manatee Collective, Orange Juice, YABAI, PLB, Z/2BBC, Black Cats, CM, etc.

Orlando is full of some of the most dedicated, non-jaded, friendly, fun kids i've ever met. What's standing in our way from having a first-rate bike collective? Awesome bike events? A supportive culture and community that encompasses all of our little clubs and "cliques?" Our own inertia, that's what. And objects at rest; cultures at rest, tend to stay at rest.

An Appeal for Barley Barber and an Appellate Bond for Stevie Lynn Lowe:

On July 23, 2009, Stevie Lynn Lowe went to trial for her actions to
defend and save Barley Barber Swamp. Stevie faced the charges of
trespassing into Barley Barber and for resisting arrest when she swam
through the swamp, climbed a tall Swamp Maple and locked herself to
the tree. At 3705 Megawatts, FPL’s Martin County Power Plant, which
sits adjacent to Barley Barber is killing the wetlands through
hydrologic disruption and pollution.

The Jury found Stevie no guilty of trespassing. Neither the State nor
FPL could prove that the energy giant owns Barley Barber. This was a
major victory. However, the charge of resisting arrest without
violence, a misdemeanor, stuck. The Judge presiding over the case
sentenced Stevie, who has no prior record, to 90 days in jail and a
year probation for that single charge which rarely stands on its own.
This excessive sentencing is an obvious attempt to stifle dissent.
We still need to raise approximately $5000 more to get Stevie out on a
$10,000 appellate bond while we proceed to appeal several aspects of
the case. The money raised for bond will eventually come back to us
after the appeal process and will we used for future organizing and
legal support for direct action in the swamps.

We are still working to raise the $10,000 for her appellate bond. We
just spoke to her this morning, today is her 14th day inside Martin
County Jail. She is in an over-crowded unit, forced to sleep in the
common area. She has still not received a room and is experiencing
sleep deprivation. She says there are 18 women in a unit designed to
hold only 10 and the showers have been going out of order. She also
says she has submitted a request for vegetarian food which is not
being processed, and has not been able to get healthy meals, according
to her spiritual beliefs.. Please give the jail a call and let them
know she has support on the outside. PLEASE STAY POLITE and FOCUSED.
Our suggested message to the jail administration is this:

"I have been informed that an inmate named Stevie Lowe is in an
over-crowed housing unit and is being denied food consistent with her
spiritual beliefs."

Call the Martin County Jail at (772) 220-7200.. They may ask you for
your name and phone number and if you would like to have a call back
regarding this matter. If you are not willing to do that, we suggest

What does this really mean? I know most of us already won't buy coca-cola for human-rights violations (including, of course, the hired murder of labor leaders in Colombia). I know a lot of my friends are vegan too. We "vote with our dollar," even if our dollar isn't that much. It seems like a lot of us are slowing down and buying in lately. I've heard the word faggot used casually as much as I did in high school. About a year and a half ago almost all of my friends started smoking. At first it was American Spirits and rolleys - purportedly the "conscious" choice. - and now it's camels, etc. This whole trend is a slippery slope - I've seen many quit being vegan too.

Of course this choice rests on everyone. I'm just bummed that my friends are "norming out" - some of which inspired me to become vegan, or told me about how fucked up coke or mcdonalds or ________ was. If any of these things ever really meant anything to you - please think about who you are giving your money to - and for what.

For those of us who drink alcohol (myself included) there are things to be considered.

Anheuser-Busch InBev Corporation has a shorter list of problems. On the surface, they do own and operate the Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove parks, that make money with their "entertainment zoos," exploiting captive animals. I'm not able to find too much else aside from the usual big corporation stuff - as a sidenote, all AB Beers are vegan. So if this is acceptable to you, A/B beers may be for you when you're getting some beers at the bodega. PBR may also be acceptable, as their own brand, but they are partially outsource-brewed by SABMiller.

Microbreweries are also a good choice, but make sure to check which are vegan - barnivore.com is a good way to look them up. As is googling "(beer name) vegan". As a quick reference - all german beers are vegan by default following the German Purity Law of 1516 that essentially limited what a German-Produced beer could be made from (water, barley, hops, yeast). Also, strangely enough, Guiness Extra-Stout is vegan. Other vegan beers I like:

North Coast Brewing Company: Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout (9% abv - Russian Imperial Stout and my favorite beer), Scrimshaw Pilsener (4.4% abv, German-style Pilsener)
Dogfish Head Brewery: 90-Minute IPA (9% abv, Imperial IPA), Chicory Stout (5.2% abv, American Stout)
Rogue Ales: Mocha Porter (5.2% abv, American Porter), Dead Guy Ale (6.5% abv, Helles Bock)

42BELOW VODKA / BICYCLE FILM FESTIVAL = 42RIDE

So as you may well know, our good friend and bicycle mechanic extraordinaire, Jonathan Scarboro (sorry if I misspelled that) was chosen as one of 42 riders to participate in the "42RIDE" - a tour across north america - from NY to LA. This ride benefits the Alliance for Biking and Walking (appropriately, a contribution of $'¥?'42,000). On top of this the riders are compensated (very well, might I add).

Strangely enough, a guy I met when I was up in Greensboro, NC (chris) was also chosen, and will be on the Northern Route with Jonathan. They both are keeping blogs of the journey (see below) - ought to make for a good read.

So I Elise and I went to St. Pete yesterday to ride bikes/hang out/aquarium it a little and I ran into some RRBC kids there who were really nice - I randomly thought that It'd be cool if we went to one of their critical masses, they're also on the last friday ov the month (like most cm rides), and according to google maps - the non-highway (bicycle route) is about 125 miles. So why not ride it? We could possibly have someone drive some tallbikes and such out too if they weren't up for the ride, too. I'd like to hereby propose that yabai bc make a "pilgrimage" to st pete to hang out and ride cm with risk and reward bc - and I propose July 31st to do it - maybe leave the 28th or something and try to knock out the ride in two days and chill one more before the ride. Then we'd be riding back - if everyone's in lets mark the calendars and get off work...

Early this morning (June 5th), Peruvian police launched a violent attack on
a nonviolent road blockade held by Amazonian indigenous protesters opposing
10 laws that would open up their territory to increased mineral, oil, gas
and timber exploitation. Police opened fire with live ammunition, killing
at least 28 people.

WHY TAKE ACTION

The first reason to take action, of course, is simply out of solidarity
with our fellow warriors in the struggle for a just and sustainable world.
But why are we sending out this action alert as Root Force?

For nearly two months, thousands indigenous protesters have nearly
paralyzed Peru's Amazon region with blockades of critical transportation
and mining infrastructure. They have sparked a national discourse over the
limits to development and who owns nature, and have made it clear that they
will not surrender any of their ancestral homelands.

At the heart of the issue are 10 laws passed by presidential decree that
would greatly facilitate industrial exploitation of the Amazon. THIS IS
CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE, intended to supply new raw materials for the
global market. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE WEAK POINTS OF THE SYSTEM that we are
always talking about.

The indigenous warriors fighting for their lives have pushed this issue
into the global eye, and the Peruvian government has placed itself in a
position of weakness by murdering unarmed protesters. Even before the
recent killings, a congressional panel had already declared 2 of the laws
unconstitutional, and only through procedural tricks has the president's
party been able to stall debate on repealing one of those laws.

This is one of those rare cases where SUSTAINED INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE
COULD TIP THE SCALES. If these laws are repealed, it will be a major
setback for infrastructure expansion plans in a truly critical region of
the hemisphere.

HOW TO TAKE ACTION

You can email critical people in the Peruvian government through this link,

Yabai Cuts Ideas

So seeing as a lot of us have been cut-less (cutlas supreme?) for some time due to logistical nightmares with my screening shit - i had an idea (borrowed from the crucifixed kids) who had made theirs with a stencil - i figure this way we can crank (get it?) out shit way easier and not leave anyone out (or worse yet "unlucky them" (its a joke for mike)). The crucifixed kids had a prospect there whose initiation was to sit in a wheelchair for 24 hours during slaughterama - the wheelchair had the crucifixed colors stencilled on the back and said "cripplefixed". It was pretty funny. The guy totally did it too.

Slaughterama Recap (part duh)

Recipes for fun

So the backstory (for those who didn't already know) - we'd saved up a little to get up to slaughterama, but wound up shelling that out to get a new place once we were evicted from the house. The story on that is also long, but the house went into foreclosure in october and we've been squatting it ever since.

Anyways, the sheriff's came 'a knocking and we were all kicked to the curb.

After giving up on getting to RVA, randon from St. Pete asked if we still wanted to go on thursday, on friday we were in RVA. That character....

We wound up staying in Church Hill (punx rule!) for my first time ever being there, at Julie and Julie, and Miranda and about 6 dogs house. First morning there (saturday) I rode it up to harrison st. before everyone got up and hung out with the lil florida kids at, um, lil florida. By the time the rest of our fl team arrived there it was time to get down to belle isle for the events.

If you've never been to RVA or specifically, the little island on the james river right next to downtown, you need to do it. Theres this windy ass bridge that hangs below a super-tall overpass, the pedestrian bridge, itself about 50 ft above the water. There's an old iron factory or something that's just a roof now and that's where slaughterama was held. Immediately, we saw shittons of bikes, kids, vests, stuff, etc. The clubs represented this year were really diverse, from face-tattooed black label kids all the way to some tall-tee wearing kids from "Get Loose Crew," and all kinds of punx and college kids in between. I saw a particularly cool looking tallbike belonging to a guy from Klunker League Now that would've been my pick for best in show (no pics about it yet, i spose).

Events

The festivities started out drunk and only got drunker. The first event was called "six-pack attack" which was a relay involving a "custom" six pack (mismatched canned drinks, beer, v8, etc) that each team member must chug one of while navigating the course, dodging others riding and trash and stuff thrown by the spectators. We couldn't get 6 together in time, but it sure was fun to watch.

Next up was a "chicken fight" race (see last post for a photo-explanation) anthony and I were on a team, as were randon and derek. The course was the whole pavilion and as usual, trash and distractions and people dodging was abundant. Anthony and I got 2nd before wrecking into the first-placers whose wheel completely taco'ed in front of us.

After this was an egg-race where you had to protect an egg (i know, not vegan) for the course of the race, and whoever had theirs last won. I ran into cody for the first time during this and he almost bumped my egg (dot com?). I got out pretty quick.

Next up was wall-of-death-style foot down, intense, we need to do this here.

After that was chariot jousting, really silly for sure.

Then was tallbike whiplash (which if you know what whiplash is, you can imagine what kind of a bad idea it was, awesome) - basically two riders face eachother while tethered around the chest to eachother by a ~40ft rope. On the start they ride past eachother until one gets yanked off their bike. The first matchup I saw, one guy hit the ground so hard, I felt it in the floor.

The final event was the tallbike joust, which was way better done than when I saw it at the bcbc event in '07 (i guess everyone was just good at it, instead of just 2 people who were good and a bunch of others willing to hit the beach hard - including meself). It took about 20 minutes to get through the line to do it, but I wound up winning my only joust of the day! It was sweet, but now I have a brutal bruise on my stomach/hip from the lance that hit me. The guy I beat immediately high-fived me and shit and was super nice.

After this I tried a bunch of bikes and we chilled hard with the zombie bikes, bad cactus and rota kids, and consumed mad charity beers.

Charity Beers

I was broke as a joke in Richmond, but somehow got a bunch of charity beers. It was totally cool. Saturday morning on harrison I saw a kid riding a black conversion and said hi casually, and he introduced himself as "pasqual from charlotte" and then gave me a beer and said "welcome to richmond."

Later on at slaughterama I was watching some bmx kids go off on a double and some guy (ian - from rva) thanked me for watching his case and gave derek and I two more beers. Anthony and Andrea both had me covered, as did Fran (miami/ny now i guess, some of you prolly know her) and some close talker at a dance party later named "danielle with a 'd'" (the first letter of her name, not a weiner or a derek). Andrea also spotted me some viddles so shoutout to ye there.

Post-Slaughterama Dance Party

Weird ass loft at 3rd and broad, tons of smelly kids shaking asses to rap, more fun that I expected. Anthony prolly got mad URL's. There was also one of those things where the floor parts and people do little solo things, and we were all fucking around pretending to break dance and shit, then anthony busts out some legit-ass capoeira moves and everyone went apeshit.

i was deeply shocked, as were many others, by events that took place tonight downtown. i could not believe what i was seeing. i was scared...and enraged. not having been downtown, save hoops, in a very long time, we were surprised to see mounted police. for the first few seconds it was kind of like a novelty to me, but it soon became disturbing when police started side stepping their horses directly into people--actually coming into contact with people who were just standing on the sidewalk on the west side of the street or even standing in line to purchase vegan hot dogs, where we were.

we got our phones ready to take still images and video as they began to literally herd people south on orange avenue. we decided to follow in order to record anything inappropriate that might happen, and, while walking in that direction, we heard and saw someone climb a tree in order to avoid being trampled. at that point we knew that it was important for us to witness what was occurring, so we crossed to the west side of the street and stood calmly and silently with our phones pointed at the police, who were arresting a few people. a group of people walked by and asked what i was doing. i told them that i was just standing there, ready to take pictures if something out of line should take place, and they shook my hand as if we were friends. its funny how people bond in such circumstances.

it is unclear to me exactly what had taken place right there, but i do know that there was one person with a brace on his leg who received additional injury from the commotion. he was clearly asking for help and jon, derek and i were asking him within earshot of multiple officers if he was okay (he said no) and asking the police to please help him. he exchanged numbers with derek.

while stooping down to talk to this person i was nearly trampled by a horse once. i pulled my phone back up between myself and the horse to try and photograph the face of the officer on that horse, which caused him to intentionally try to trample me again. i had to jump over one of those concrete planters to get out of the way.

at that point i realized that i wasn't just obligated to watch for misconduct, but i should also be recording badge numbers. poor, naive sarah thought that she could just ask and receive. i tried to approach the police officer who had nearly trampled my twice, but he refused to acknowledge me, so i approached the ones who were walking their bikes. ALL of them also refused to acknowledge me even though i was calmly, politely and continuously saying, "sir, excuse me sir, please sir, excuse me, sir, sir...." i was right next to them, but they just kept walking, refusing eye contact and any form of sympathy or SERVING and PROTECTING. finally, one said, "i don't know his number," so i asked him if he could please get it for me. he refused and basically blew me off. i asked for his, which he gave--although who knows if it is fake or not, but i will follow up.

i tried again to approach the one who had tried to trample me. he made eye contact with me and verbally refused to supply his badge number. he chased me in circles while jon and derek were yelling at him. a few times i put my hands in front of me even though i knew they wouldn't do any good against a horse, so he yelled at me not to touch the horse, to which i replied that he shouldn't touch me with his horse then. all this time i had been yelling, "please, please stop! please! may i have your badge number? badge number...badge number! stop! please!" derek and jon were both also asking for badge numbers and trying to communicate with them, and the mounted police also went after both of them with their horses.

the police were apparently distracted by someone else or something because they started moving away from us, all the while yelling at people, blowing their whistles and running their out of control horses through a parking lot. we saw that, hopefully, nothing further was going to happen because all the people left seemed to be thinning out and moving towards their cars, so we decided to go back to ours.

we couldn't believe this was happening. apparently it happens every weekend?! i'm not clear on how extreme it usually is, but jon and i would like to call for a COP WATCH every friday night until people can feel safe walking on the sidewalks of orlando. we have enough to worry about with crime rates. police should not be focusing on harassing and endangering innocent, law abiding people--they are supposed to make sure WE are safe.

so, every friday night i was thinking that it might be good to have some form of symbol representing anti fascism (jon and i were thinking an arm band or something) so that we can visually show solidarity. also a chant of some kind might be good because it would encourage anyone and everyone standing around to join in, so if anyone comes up with anything...share it!

most importantly, i think it is of high importance to keep constantly in our minds that horses are DANGEROUS. they spook easily and all efforts should be made to avoid injuring or harassing them. just because some fascists think its okay to use them to herd humans like livestock doesn't mean that we should view them as their accomplices. they are victims, too!

as i said, we have video that we will be posting--so check back. please do not sit back and think this will go away or that it is just one of those things. its not! our lives should not be endangered just because we decide to go out on the weekend or buy a hot dog. this won't go away unless we force it to. the police have been getting away with too much for too long!

From the Earth First! Organizers’ Conference & Winter Rendezvous in the Sonoran desert this February to the Round River Rendezvous in Cascadia this summer, a band of eco-rebels will be crossing the US Empire to renew a fighting movement that can stop this industrial nightmare from choking the life out of the earth.

The need for resistance in solidarity with the wild has never been louder or clearer than it is today; the roadshow is a great tool for growing that resistance. There are countless examples to draw from in the story of radical movements before us: militant labor organizing tours, anti-fascist resistance recruitment and international speaking tours to build cross-border solidarity. The origin of Earth First! itself is credited to a few roadshows that kicked it all off in the early 1980s. We are building on this tradition; akin to a fellowship crossing Middle Earth to amass insurgents to face Mordor head-on.

List-serves and websites aren’t enough
This Roadshow’s primary intention is to strengthen our radical grassroots ecological network. For almost 30 years, we have been an organized voice bridging conservation biology with grassroots community organizing, road blockading and eco-sabotage. In the past 5 years we have seen numbers and experience-level in the EF! movement decline drastically. Yet, our place has never been more urgent. New groups are popping up across the country, but they are detached from many of the groups, history, and skills that came before them. We can’t afford to stumble and make the same mistakes over again.
We are at the tail end of a decade where corporate globalization rooted itself in the US and spread across the planet like a plague. And now that the reality of climate change is finally sinking into the mainstream consciousness, the same superpowers that pushed so-called ‘free trade’ policies to exploit wild nature more efficiently are promoting carbon trading in attempt to make a profitable industry out of the disasters they’ve created. The spineless Big Green environmental NGOs are scrambling for crumbs and cutting deals with the industry for shallow public relations victories. Earth First! must rise and recognize that it’s presence is a strong component of making the broader environmental movement truly effective. We are its spine, or as an EF! co-founder, Howie Wolke, has put it, we are the lions of a movement ‘ecosystem’. Our niche is critical, and its presence (or absence) is felt deeply by our surroundings.

We need to reconnect the multi-generational aspect of Earth First! that has fallen by the wayside in recent years. We need to broaden our network’s base—from radical rural grandparents to revolutionary urban youth. We need re-establish lost relationships with scholars and scientists who resonate with us. We need to re-inspire musicians and artists to contribute their passion to our battles.

When it comes down to it, solid movements are based on strong personal relationships; and real relationships don’t go very far over the internet. We need face-to-face interaction to build trust with—and support for—each other.

For the life of the Earth First! Journal
In a time where internet communication is facilitating the end of print media, including many mainstream news outlets, we are challenged to sustain our movement’s basic, primary medium of communication: the printed Earth First! Journal. Doing this means boosting the subscription/distribution base, plain and simple. And the roadshow is a chance to do that across the country.

If, or when, the lights go out, we will have the inspiration of photos and stories spanning 3 decades that we can hold in our hands and read out loud to each other by fire light, and pass on to the next generations. We shouldn’t let go of that (at least not until the lights go out!), no matter how tempting the allure of free online publishing might get.

The EF! Journal has survived where other activist publications have faded, because there is a base of community support and movement input that is rare in other print media projects. If this publication is lost, it will be a blow to all of our efforts in defense our land, our water, our neighborhoods, our animal-relations and the entire amazing wild process of life’s evolution on this planet.

Where are we going?
If you live in the US, there is a good chance that we will be coming close enough to your home for you to get involved. The roadshow will be starting at the Organizers’ Conference in Arizona and ending at the Round River Rendezvous in Cascadia. The schedule so far looks roughly like this:

March- from the Deserts in to the Swamps
April- through the Foothills up to the Northwoods
May- across the Great Lakes and the Great Plains
June- around the Wild Rockies out to the Pacific Coast

Do you want to set up a quick stop at the local community center of college campus? Does your community want to plan a 3-day regional weekend gathering with direct action trainings and sessions on Earth First! history, vision and strategy? Or maybe something in between? Is there pending action plans that we could lend support to en route?

The Roadshow will be traveling with a variety of skills, topics and resources, including: forming affinity groups and planning direct action; blockading, climbing and occupations; bioregional news from campaigns and projects around the country; tools for challenging oppression; up-to-date news on resisting the Greenscare; independent and corporate media work; community organizing strategies; and more. A primary goal of the tour is to build the skill-base of our network. If you are looking to have specific areas of interests covered, let us know and we can tailor the stops to meet local/regional desires.

We are also looking to travel with an array of art and culture, including musicians, puppet shows, and merchandise (stickers, books, shirts, etc.), to promote the vibrancy and visibility of radical ecological resistance.

so since tuesday night i have been really really sick. fever of a 102.5 for a day then slowly coming down. really weak and tired all the time, and to top it of an outbreak of a really contagious situation that hasnt shown itself since i was a kid. anyway, i am being held prisoner by my own body. i cant even go to work. really sucks. money is tight. no beers, and no company {except forever faithful and awesome sarah}. however i guess its my due for the awesome time that was had by everyone on monday. any way here is one of the videos. more to come. hopefully we'll have some sweet pictures too.

tomorrow is gonna be awesomw. havent been to a malevolent monday in a while. hopefully lots of people will come. i think trent/vegantnt is going to stop by to learn a lil something about making bikes. i think the project for the day is a mini chopper for the risk&reward//yabai potluck that is in the pipes. im gonna try to get the day started as early as possible, so maybe we can get some supplies. workin on a new batch of colors is something we should get workin on. steve we need your help getting them supplies since you have the magic. got access to some metal tubing at my friends house so hopefully ill be able to get a ride{also got some saddle chafe goin on}.

should be a productive day and i cant freakin wait.

also i have a frame to bring over.

how was yesterday for everyone? things have been kinda slowed down {at least for me} on the bike building and dumpstering front. mostly because of the efforts from all of us to get the bike co-op up and cycling. me, derek, and from deland were also out of town for a while. then i was bike-less, and car-less which totally sucked.

ive also had to work the last few mondays and also do turn arounds on fri/sat. so freaky friday was out. plus we are trying to work out the best days for which dumpsters.

now i have my new bike, and everyone is in town and the co-op seems to have gathered steam, so hopefully we can get some new projects underway.

i would like to propose a vegan yabai potluck in the evening of sat march 14. if everyone is cool with that date then we should all request off asap so no one is left out. dont want to have it if someone cant help missing it.
